Bay Area coffee shop damaged in suspected DUI crash

A Santa Rosa coffee shop was damaged after a driver crashed his vehicle into its storefront early Thursday morning.

Tony Deatherage, owner of Bad Ass Coffee at 140 Stony Point Road in Santa Rosa, told SFGATE he was exhausted after getting up at 2 a.m. to help clear out equipment and remove shards of glass strewn throughout his business.

“[The car] took out part of the windows on the coffee shop and the tables and chairs,” Deatherage said. “Looks like we’re going to be closed all day and hopefully we’ll be back open tomorrow. The guy is lucky to be alive.”

A vehicle crashed into Bad Ass Coffee at 140 Stony Point Road in Santa Rosa on Thursday.

On Thursday, Ronal Chuc Comez, who is suspected of driving under the influence, allegedly zoomed down West 9th Street when he came to a curved section of the road and lost control of his vehicle, KPIX reports. Based on notes from the preliminary investigation obtained by KPIX, it’s believed that Comez swerved over a grass berm, hit a tree and then smashed his car into the glass storefront of Bad Ass Coffee.

The impact of the crash was so severe that Comez’s vehicle was totaled after it was wedged into the coffee shop. Local law agencies needed to use hydraulic tools to extract Comez, who was taken to a nearby hospital for his injuries. KPIX reports that Comez was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence.

Deatherage is unsure what the estimated damage caused by the crash is but said the aftermath will require him to replace much of his equipment.

“After everything we’ve been through with the fires and the pandemic, it’s not a good time to be closed,” Deatherage said. “Cost of goods are skyrocketing, too … but we’ve been through all that and … we’re going to try to open tomorrow.”

Deatherage owns another Bad Ass Coffee location in Santa Rosa at 90 Mark West Springs Road, which remains open.
